Buy Earthquake damage in Oregon: Preliminary estimates of future earthquake losses by Yumei Wang has been released as DOGAMI Special Paper 29. Wang, a geotechnical engineer, analyzed all faults with a 10% chance of causing an earthquake in the next 50 years and projected potential damage. Wang stresses that these are preliminary figures. "There are two things we could not incorporate into this study that would significantly increase these figures. One is a tsunami. A Guide for Local Governments in the Portland Metropolitan Region has been released as DOGAMI Open-File Report O-98-04. It was prepared by Spangle Associates, Urban Planning and Research of Portola, California, for Metro, the regional government for the Portland metropolitan area, and originally published by Metro. This guide describes how local governments use earthquake hazard maps prepared by DOGAMI to reduce damage and losses in earthquakes. It is addressed to local government staff and elected and appointed officials who regulate the use and development of land and construction of buildings and prepare for and manage disaster response and mitigation. The guide focuses on local government actions but recognizes that all levels of government, businesses, community organizations, households, and individuals play roles in reducing a community's vulnerability to earthquakes. The map includes the area from Aloha to Mount Scott and south to Brook and Molalla. Numerous faults in the region are outlined, including the Mount Angle fault that caused the 5.6 magnitude earthquake in 1993. Other potentially active faults on the map include the Portland Hills, Beaverton, Sherwood, Newberg, and Bolton-Marylhurst faults. The area's earthquake history, with magnitudes of historic earthquakes is included. The cost of the map is $10. Buy Relative Earthquake Hazard Map of the Portland Metro Region, Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties, Oregon The full-color relative earthquake hazard map is at the scale of 1:62,500 (about one inch to the mile). It indicates which areas will be most severely affected by earthquakes. It has been released as DOGAMI map IMS-1. The 3-by 5-foot map also includes smaller maps showing the three types of ground responses during an earthquake -- liquefaction, ground motion amplification, and slope instability. These hazards were used to determine the overall relative earthquake hazards shown on the large map. The map covers the entire area within the Metro boundaries -- from Forest Grove to Troutdale and from Hayden Island to Wilsonville. Meier of Woodward-Clyde Consultants, and S.P. Palmer of the Washington Division of Geology and Earth Resources, was released in 1995 by DOGAMI as GMS-89. Relative Earthquake Hazard Map of the Beaverton Quadrangle, Washington County, Oregon, by Mabey, Madin, and Meier, was released in 1995 by DOGAMI as GMS-90. Relative Earthquake Hazard Map of the Lake Oswego Quadrangle, Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties, Oregon, by Mabey, Madin, and Meier, was released in 1995 by DOGAMI as GMS-91. Relative Earthquake Hazard Maps of the Siletz Bay Area, Coastal Lincoln County, Oregon, by Yumei Wang and George R. Priest, DOGAMI, were released in 1995 as GMS-93. Earthquake-Hazard Geology Maps of the Portland Metropolitan Area, Oregon, were released in 1990 by DOGAMI as Open-File Report O-90-02. The report, which was prepared by DOGAMI geologist Ian P. Madin, contains basic information for the assessment of earthquake hazards in the Portland metropolitan area. It consists of eight maps and a 21-page explanatory text. The maps are one-color diazo paper reproductions and measure approximately 25 by 30 inches in size. Each map covers one 7-minute quadrangle at a scale of l:24,000. The quadrangles covered by the maps are the Beaverton, Gladstone, Hillsboro, Linnton, Lake Oswego, Mount Tabor, Portland, and Scholls quadrangles. Each map depicts all major geologic units and identifies the sediments with high earthquake-hazard potential. Where sufficient data exist, the maps show the thickness of these sediments with isopach lines. Earthquake Database for Oregon, 1833 through October 25, 1993, by A.G. Johnson of Portland State University, D.H. Scofield of Squier Associates, Inc., and I.P. Madin of DOGAMI, was released in 1994 by DOGAMI as Open-File Report O-94-04. It is provided in a dBase III format (.dbf file) on a 3-inch diskette. An introduction and explanation are contained in a text file. Over 15,000 earthquakes are included in the database, which was compiled from a variety of databases covering the Pacific Northwest. Depending on the completeness of the record, each earthquake record includes data on date and time of the event, location and depth of the epicenter, magnitude and intensity of shaking, source of data, and information on the quality of determinations of location and magnitude of the earthquake. When used in a database software program, this catalog can be searched to find earthquakes by size, time, and geographic area. Price of this report is $10. Buy
