Purpose

The purpose of the Oregon Geologic Data Compilation (OGDC) project is to assemble the best available geologic map information for the entire state by integrating the work of many individual geologic mappers into a vector digital dataset. The data are stored in a geographic information system (GIS) format with links to a relational database. The compilation is thus a "living map" that can change as new geologic information and mapping becomes available.

To understand the dramatic increase in information provided by the OGDC, compare the Grande Ronde Valley area in the most recent prior geologic map of Oregon (1991, by G.W. Walker and N.S. MacLeod, at a scale of 1:500,000 for the U.S. Geological Survey) and information in the current the OGDC map (see illustration below). The additional detail in the OGDC map is clear. The range of map scales used in the OGDC map varies from 1:6,000 to 1:500,000. This web map application shows "merged units" (see explanation in Process section below); to see the original mapper's actual formation boundaries, turn on the "Formation Boundaries" overlay and zoom to at least 1:50,000 scale. To see the data source for a particular point, select the Info Query tool, and click on the point of interest. The Info Query panel will display the Reference ID for that point. Reference IDs are tied to the Source Data list.

OGDC map showing sections of 6-year project

The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) has completed (May 2009) the six-year project to digitally compile geologic data for the entire state. This effort brings together the best available geologic mapping from state and federal agency sources, student thesis work, and consultants. Oregon Geologic Data Compilation version 3 (OGDC-3; shown in this web application) includes the Northeast, Southeast, and Central Oregon compilation datasets. A total of 187 separate geologic maps (or existing digital datasets) have been integrated for OGDC-3 (345 maps/datasets comprise the complete statewide compilation, OGDC-5). The project will create a new statewide digitally compiled geologic map coverage that will become a component of the Geoscience Theme within the Oregon Framework Themes. The Oregon Framework Themes effort is coordinated by the Oregon Geospatial Enterprise Office, Oregon Department of Administrative Services.

To accomplish this project, DOGAMI is working in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Oregon Geographic Information Council (OGIC). This partnership serves a number of important functions. First, it shares the funding burden of this ambitious compilation effort. Equally important, the partnership provides a review process to ensure the resulting data are consistent in structure, fully documented, and serve the greatest number of potential users.

Oregon Data Model

A geologic map data model provides a structure for the organization, storage, and use of the computerized geologic map information. The Oregon Geologic Data Model has four major information components: spatial, geologic, descriptive, and metadata. Design concepts for the Oregon Geologic Data Model came from two primary sources: the North American Data Model, v. 4.3, developed by USGS, and the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) Data Model, v. 2.1. Both of these models served as references in designing the Oregon Data Model, but the Oregon Data Model differs from these models in its basic structure. (For a detailed discussion of the difference, see "Oregon Statewide Geologic Map Data: A Pilot Project Where Digital Techniques Changed the Geologic Map Compilation Process and Product," USGS Open-File Report 2004–1451, http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2004/1451/ferns/index.html by Mark L. Ferns, Ronald P. Geitgey, Margaret D. Jenks, Lina Ma, Ian P. Madin, Vicki S. McConnell, and Paul E. Staub.)

Several overarching principles govern way the source data are compiled for the OGDC. The Oregon Geologic Data Standard (OGDS), a document prepared for the Oregon Geographic Information Council, provides details about data structure, formatting, the Geologic Data Model, etc.  Edits are pending to this standard; however, the overarching principles remain unchanged:

Compilation Process

The DOGAMI Compilation Mapping Team (CMT) is performing the geologic data gathering and development effort. The CMT has developed a plan to complete the Geologic Compilation for all of Oregon over a period of six years. A pilot project in the northeastern portion of the state tested data structuring and mapping techniques and established the working partnerships..

The DOGAMI compilation team decided to use a different method to compile a new statewide digital map. This process is referred to as “the Oregon Pilot method.” (For a detailed discussion of the difference, see "Oregon Statewide Geologic Map Data: A Pilot Project Where Digital Techniques Changed the Geologic Map Compilation Process and Product," USGS Open-File Report 2004–1451, http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2004/1451/ferns/index.html.) Many of the differences between this method and the conventional method were driven by the expanded opportunities created by providing a digital version of the map rather than a printed map.

Using the Oregon Pilot method, the compilation team follows these steps to make the statewide digital product:

  1. Digitize the original mapped units, faults and folds for each of the best available source geologic maps.In this step, paper or stable-based film copies of original reference geologic maps are collected. Each original map is examined to ensure the map has adequate map control information to allow successful georeferencing. Maps are scanned (color or grayscale) at 300 dots per inch and provided as tagged image format (tiff) files. Georeferencing is performed with Blue Marble Geographics Geographic Transformer. This software allows entering numerous points to establish the basis for assigning world coordinates to the image coordinates. The software calculates error on the fly, and all maps are processed with a tolerance of 1 pixel error. In the processing, each map is projected into the Oregon Lambert Projection. For OGDC versions 1 and 2, a decision was made regarding whether the map would be digitized "heads-up" using MapInfo Professional GIS software or go through further processing in a raster-to-vector program (R2V software). Although the map images could be processed directly in MapInfo Professional, most maps were first traced onto Mylar. The Mylar was then scanned, georeferenced, and projected. The resulting image was processed in R2V to yield linework. For OGDC-3, maps were all ‘heads up’ digitized directly from the scanned images using an interactive pen display monitor. The resulting polygon or line file is inspected to determine the completeness and accuracy for each map. Finally, the linework is processed by a polygon building utility that runs in MapInfo Professional. Polygon and line attributing are then performed, with the resulting file appended into a master polygon file as well as separate fault and fold line files. (Fold line data are included in the full OGDC dataset, available for purchase on CD; they are not included in the current version of the compilation map on the web.)
source data maps used for OGDC Central, NE, and SE sections
  2. Enter the information from the source map author’s explanation of units into a relational database. The geologic map data are stored in standard geographic information system (GIS) spatial data formats, linked to a standard relational database format. The Oregon Geologic Map Data Model provides a structure for the organization, storage, and use of the computerized geologic map information.

  3. Rank the maps in terms of the quality of the geological mapping and then decide on the order of supersedure for appending the maps. For example, in this ranking, a newer, detailed, 1:24,000 scale map by a professional geologist replaces an area of an older, more general map at a smaller scale or replaces a map created by a graduate student..

  4. Put the best available polygonal/spatial information together into a single layer, primarily using the more detailed or better quality maps, but retaining the less detailed or poorer quality maps in areas where no other coverage is available. This process creates an “appended” map that contains all of the best geologic unit polygons.

  5. Create new compilation merge unit labels for each of the original source map unit polygons that have been appended together in the map. These new labels effectively merge the units from all of the different source maps into a coherent stratigraphic or lithologic framework. We thus create “logical seamlessness” for the compilation map while preserving the original author's interpretations. Logical seamlessness occurs when a number of source datasets are integrated into one and the resulting disjointed features are not edge matched (modified geometrically) to fit together. Instead, these features are associated through attributing (Federal Geographic Data Committee, 1995, Development of a National Digital Geospatial Data Framework, section 5.2 Technical Context). The merge unit labels are based on our current understanding of the geologic history of Oregon as well as any new geochemical analyses, especially in volcanic areas. Professional geologists who have been working in and have a broad understanding of the geology of a particular area of the state assign the compilation merge unit labels. The OGDC CD dataset includes labels for geology, lithology, and basic geologic type (sedimentary, volcanic, intrusive, etc.); several types of compilation merge unit labels can be made or modified from the published data to suit the end user’s needs. Units on the web map cannot be modified by viewers.

For a complete listing and explanation of the spatial data content, see the Entity and Attribute Information section of the metadata file. All spatial data files are in the custom Oregon Lambert Conformal Conic projection (parameters listed in metadata file). The source data maps are also listed below.

Puchase OGDC Dataset DVD

You can purchase the full, statewide Oregon Geologic Data Compilation DVD (OGDC-5) -- not this web map application -- from Nature of the Northwest. The data on the DVD are provided as spatial data for Geographic Information System (GIS) software and tabular data for use with Microsoft Access™ 2000 database software. A tabular data browser is included on the DVD. Knowledge of and access to GIS and database software applications are essential to the use of the DVD version of the compilation. Users of the compilation DVD are strongly urged to review various read-me documents on the DVD not only to understand what the dataset contains and how it is structured but also to understand the decisions made regarding data entry protocol.

Currently, the only way that users can do sophisticated analyses based on visually comparing the results of a wide variety of queries is by using the data on the DVD.
