Map Components
The components and functionality of the DOGAMI Lidar Data Viewer are explained individually below. |
Pan and Zoom Controls
Pan and Zoom controls allow you to navigate around the map. Besides panning north, south, east, and west you can pan NE, NW, SE, SW by clicking between the N, S, E, and W arrows. Zoom scales are:

Scale Bar
The scale bar provides an approximate scale in miles for the map. To change the scale, use the Pan and Zoom Controls. |
Latitude and Longitude
The latitude and longitude of the cursor's current position on the map are shown in the lower left corner of the map. |
Overview Map
A red box on the small outline map of the area in the lower right corner shows the extent of the large map area. You can click-and-drag in the overview map area to change the focus of the large map. Click on the small arrow to hide the overview map. |
Base Map Options
Four base maps are available for areas where lidar data imagery is not available: Not all base maps display at all scales (see chart below). The images below, shown at 1:72,224 scale, show the same area using each of the base maps. Lidar imagery is shown for comparison. Note that although lidar-derived imagery is viewable at all scales, the power and utility of lidar-derived imagery are best seen at 1:9,028 and 1:4,514 scale in this map.

Banner Area Controls
Controls at the top right of the map allow you to search for and identify DOGAMI Lidar Data Quadrangles, show/hide the map legend, draw and measure on the map interface, find and zoom to an address, view the legend, print the current extent, and open the splash screen ("About" link). |
Lidar Quad Search/Purchase: Use this tool to identify specific quadrangles on the map and to order Lidar Quadrangle Data publications. Click on the icon to display the Lidar Quad Search/Purchase toolbox. First, use the dropdown "Search layer" to select the search. You can search for Ohio grid, USGS topographic quadrangle name, or county.
Then click on the "Select by Attribute" button.
Results appear in the "Results" window.
If you mouse over a result, that layer polygon is highlighted on the map and a popup displays relevant fields. Below, the user has moused over the "Timber" quadrangle result, causing that polygon to be outlined in red and the Timber quad information to pop up.
If a DOGAMI Lidar Data Quadrangle (LDQ) publication exists for that area, you can click on the "Order Data" button or on the http link on the popup to go directly to the Nature of the Northwest Information Center to order that data quadrangle. Note that some partial quadrangles are bundled together into single publications.
To clear the results, click on the "Clear" button in the Search window. |
Map Legend: The map legend shows status of lidar acquisition and availability. If lidar is available, you can order it from Nature of the Northwest by using the Lidar Quad Search or by contacting Nature of the Northwest directly
Draw and Measure: Use this tool set to draw and symbolize your own points, lines, and polygons on the map interface. Optionally, you can add text annotation and show measurement values.
Select the drawing tool you want to use. Click on a point or use the mouse to draw a line or shape. Onscreen tooltips will guide you as you draw. Before starting your drawing, select fill color, fill style, alpha (transparency; 1 is opaque; 0.5 is 50% transparent), outline color and stroke weight, and units for measurements if you choose to display measurements.
Add annotation with the text tool. Before clicking on the map, select text options. When ready to place text, click where you want the text to be centered.
You can draw as many features as you like. Drawings are cumulative until you click the "Clear drawings" link, even if you close the Draw and Measure toolbox. If your drawing and text appear on current extent of the map, they will be part of any print file you make. |
Find an address: Use this tool to zoom to a location by entering a COMPLETE address, including city and "OR" or "Oregon" (select the mailbox icon) or geographic coordinates (select the pushpin icon).
In the example below, the user has entered "200 Main St., Portland" in the Address fields. The results show two possibilities, one on SW Main Street and one on SE main Street. The map has zoomed to the second (last) found possible address, but if the user clicks on the other address, the map will zoom to that address. The score indicates the "confidence" that the address is the one entered by the user.
Recently Published Lidar: Use this tool to see what areas have been added recently to the viewer. Click on an area to zoom to that area.
You can also "bookmark" your own areas of interest. Use the map tools to navigate and zoom to your area of interest. Then click on the "Add Bookmark" icon..
Your bookmark will be added to the list. If you move around the map, you can return to your bookmarked area by clicking on the name. Your bookmark will remain for the duration of your current lidar viewer session. To delete your bookmark, click on the red circle with an "x" in it.
Print: Print the current extent of the map. Clicking the icon causes a popup box to appear. Optionally, enter a name and subtitle for your map view, then click the "Print " button to display a Print dialog box. Choose printer settings as you normally would for your printer setup.
