Project Purpose

Oregon finds itself with a critical need given the current energy situation – a better understanding of how its geothermal resources can contribute to the increasing demand for electricity and applications in direct-use. The purpose of the Geothermal Information Layer for Oregon (GTILO) is to compile and tabulate past geothermal exploration and development activities in Oregon and integration of the results into a comprehensive database.

The goal of the project is two-fold: 1) establish a database of the state's geothermal resources that is an effective means to communicate Oregon's geothermal potential and 2) promote future investment in geothermal energy. Also, GTILO furthers the mission of the Department for geothermal energy studies and directly relates to the state's Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). The RPS fosters market demand and essentially makes the state's utilities meet a specific renewable capacity requirement, "green" power with a power generation capacity of 25 percent by 2025. Geothermal power could become an important part of the state's renewable mix as a firm, dependable supply of electric power – any time – and for energy saving non-electrical purposes (low-temperature direct-use applications). See Resources and Download Data for geothermal data sources used.

Project Objective(s)

Approach

The information that has been collected on the location, temperature, and other features of thermal springs and wells (geothermal exploration, geothermal test, and water wells) has been compiled from various sources. Although the data set for GTILO is statewide in extent, coverage varies from county to county because the data collection was contingent upon a variety of published and unpublished literature sources, exploration activities, or research programs with which we have not established ties. These datasets may contain some errors, but care has been taken to prevent duplications and omissions. The sources of information are indicated by reference identification codes, which correspond to the same codes in the companion annotated bibliography.

Thermal springs and water well data are included here that have temperatures of 68°F (20°C) and above. However, the use of the term "warm" in a spring's name or well's name has led to listing them in this database. A characteristic of thermal springs in Oregon is that they usually represent a group of affiliated springs. Examples of thermal springs that constitute “one” group of hot springs are: Borax Springs, Mickey Springs, and Alvord Springs. In previous studies, it was customary to count each spring group but not every spring in that group. However, the University of Idaho counted each spring in the three spring groups mentioned above. For this compilation, we did the same but only when a spring, which would have been otherwise included in a group, was separately shown on a U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale quadrangle map.

Outcome Statement

GTILO's outcome and the methods used for the compilation work are briefly explained in the text that follows. The work can be broken down into four outcomes, including each of their key project development activities:

Outcome 1: First priority was given to electronic capture of the Department's geothermal research, which spans more than two decades (1970s through the 1980s). Some of the results have been published in the nearly fifty reports that the Department prepared documenting Oregon's geothermal resources (Clark, 2003), but others have not. Also, this task included compiling permit information for over 1,100 geothermal exploration wells and geothermal wells. In addition, digital information on Oregon's geothermal resources was checked in the following databases:

Where Departmental records were lacking, incomplete, or appear to be of poor quality, data in the aforementioned databases were included in GTILO. However, budgetary limitations and the project's short performance period precluded taking full and exhaustive advantage of the available geothermal data relevant to Oregon.

Outcome 2: Characterization of Oregon's geothermal resources and establishment of a statewide database of geothermal systems uses a Geographic Information System (GIS). GIS functionality is achieved through a geospatial database — files were created in MapInfo .tab format and translated to ESRI, ArcView .shp format for greater accessibility, in the Oregon Lambert Projection. Metadata and results of a geothermal bibliography search accompany the GIS files.

The dataset for this release of GTILO is a collection of six files:

Outcome 3: Recognizing the growing use of the Internet and other online methods, the Department launched a web mapping application to host GTILO. This system allows users free access to the geothermal datasets and ability to interactively view, create, print, and copy geothermal maps. To this end, GTILO's datasets are linked to MapServer, an open-source internet application that renders spatial data (maps, images, and vector data) for the web.

Outcome 4: The GIS datasets for GTILO are available to everyone as a free download (a zipped copy). This site also allows free access to geophysical data in the form of scanned borehole-geophysical logs for many of the geothermal wells.

Impact/Technical Merit

GTILO serves not only as a quick source of Oregon's important geothermal background information, but also (1) facilitates study of potential geothermal resource areas; (2) enhances our ability to test hypothesis using GIS analysis; and (3) supports modeling efforts to locate "hidden" geothermal systems. GTILO is also relevant for anyone interested in geothermal energy in Oregon, including researchers, developers, and policy makers. The merit of GTILO goes to answering this fundamental question, what is the extent to which geothermal resources can contribute to the increasing demand for electricity and application of direct use in Oregon?
