Grants Pass Current Projects
Mapping efforts are underway in Klamath and Josephine Counties. Emphasis on these two areas is at the direction of the Oregon Geologic Map Advisory Committee, a group of government, private, and academic geologists, soil scientists, hydrologists and land managers that meets annually to prioritize needs for geologic data on a statewide basis.
In Klamath County, recognition of geologic issues including earthquake and volcanic hazards, watershed health, and geologic controls on ground-water have resulted in a program to prepare detailed geologic maps covering the City of Klamath Falls and other priority areas in the upper Klamath River Basin.
Geologic mapping in Josephine County addresses issues including watershed health, geologic hazards, ground-water, and mineral resources.

The Baker City Field Office was established in 1937, along with Portland and Grants Pass offices, when the Oregon State Legislature created the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). The office is staffed with a Regional Geologist, Mark L. Ferns; Field Geologist, Jason D. McClaughry; and an Office Specialist, Jan Durflinger.
The Baker City Field Office is a team dedicated to public education and multipurpose geologic mapping.Our goals include the recognition of geologic hazards, characterization of the distribution of surface and subsurface water resources, and recognition of potential mineral resources. These goals are reached through detailed geologic mapping (1:24,000 scale), lithologic description, geochemical and petrographic analyses, study of subsurface well log data, and GIS spatial analysis of multiple data layers.These techniques enable DOGAMI to effectively analyze and archive geologic data, to produce user-friendly graphics, and to serve the broad interests of the public by providing a cost-effective source of geologic information.
The Baker City Field Office is the largest supplier of for-sale maps in Eastern Oregon. Topographic maps produced by Oregon Department of Forestry, U.S. Geological Survey, and Bureau of Land Management are the largest stocked items. DOGAMI and other publications of interest to the professional and general public are also for sale. The office is stocked with scanned images of historical publications that are for sale in CD and paper format. The office library contains a very large amount of historical data, in published and unpublished form. These maps and reports are all available to the public for use in the office. The material can be acquired from the Baker City Field Office with a VISA or MasterCard by phone, mail, email, or FAX. Jan Durflinger, our Office Specialist, is available to conduct fee-based historical research in the office library.
Baker City Field Office Current Projects
Geologic mapping projects in 2005 and 2006 are in the Lower Crooked River Basin in the vicinity of Prineville, Crook County. Baker City field office geologists will focus on areas in the Willamette Valley during the upcoming 2007 field season..
Mark Ferns, Regional Geologist, has been with DOGAMI since 1979 and holds an M.S. degree from the University of Oregon, Eugene. Mark has a wide knowledge of eastern Oregon geology and has a particular interest in metamorphic and volcanic terranes. His most recent work focuses on volcanic stratigraphy and includes the La Grande 1:100,000 scale quadrangle, the Upper Grande Ronde River Basin, and Umatilla River Basin mapping projects. Currently, his work with Jason McClaughry is completing the geologic mapping in the Lower Crooked River Basin in the vicinity of Prineville.

Jason McClaughry, Field Geologist, has been with the Baker City Field Office since 2004 and has a B.S. degree from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, and M.S. degree from Washington State University, Pullman. Jason’s expertise and interests are in volcanic stratigraphy and modern and ancient landslide deposits. Since joining DOGAMI, Jason completed Oregon’s central and eastern portion of the U.S. Geological Survey National Geochemical Sampling Program and is currently working to complete quadrangle mapping and summary publications for the geology of the Lower Crooked River Basin.
Both Mark and Jason use computer-aided mapping techniques and GIS spatial analysis.

The coastal zone has a number of unique characteristics that lead to equally unique hazards and needed expertise to deal with these hazards. Recent funding of a coastal field office by the Legislature is an explicit recognition of the unique problems of the coastal zone. Setting up and staffing this office have just been completed in Newport.
Coastal Hazard Mitigation program - Current Projects
Current activities and projects include:
- Detailed Geotechnical Analyses of the Johnson Creek Landslide - A Large Translational Landslide in Seaward-Dipping Sedimentary Rocks that bisects US Highway 101.
- Analyses of a dynamic revetment and artificial dune for shore protection at Cape Lookout State Park, Oregon.
- Coastal erosion hazard mapping for Lincoln County.
- Coastal erosion hazard mapping for Nesika Beach, Curry County.
- Tsunami hazard modeling and mapping of Alsea Bay, Waldport.
- Tsunami evacuation mapping, signage, and brochure production for Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford, Nestucca Fire District of Tillamook County, Newport, and Depoe Bay (see a list of completed tsunami evacuation brochures).
- Review of applications to build critical or essential facilities in the tsunami inundation zone defined through the Senate Bill 379 process (Oregon Revised Statutes 455.446, and 455.447).

The Department of Geology and Mineral Industries - Mineral Land Regulation and Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLRR) issues permits for all extraction, processing, and reclamation for minerals. Permitting for oil, gas, and geothermal exploration is also done through the Albany office of DOGAMI.

|
A permit is required from DOGAMI-MLRR for any mine where more than 5,000 cubic yards of material are removed or where mining affects more than one acre of land within a twelve month period. Certain on-site construction activities are exempt including forest access roads for timber removal.
